The green space will be built behind the Cunningham and Collicot schools. For an aerial view of the design, click here.
No. The green space is intended to alleviate overcrowding by providing additional outdoor recess space to both schools.
The Cunningham Foundation generously allows the schools to use the Cunningham Park facilities for special occasions, such as field day. Unfortunately, the amount of wear and tear that would result from the park being used for daily recess periods would exceed the park's capacity for maintenance. Constructing a dedicated recess space will help to ensure Cunningham Park remains accessible and enjoyable to all Milton residents.
If we achieve our fundraising goal in the spring of 2020, we anticipate that the green space will be completed in time for the 2020-2021 school year.
As a parent-led initiative, we are relying entirely on grants, individual donations, and sponsorships to make this project a reality.
The recess facilities that are shared by the Cunningham and Collicot schools were built to accommodate a total of 900 students across both schools. Given recent growth in Milton public elementary school enrollment, these schools currently educate a combined total of 1,300 students each year-- a number that is predicted to grow by 34% over the next decade.
